Founded in Amsterdam in 2006, The Next Web (TNW) has covered Europe’s technology ecosystem for nearly two decades. TNW was majority-owned by the Financial Times Group from 2019 until Tekpon acquired its media and events brand in December 2025.
In its August 14 article, TNW Editor-in-Chief Ana-Maria Stanciuc examines the Industrial Accelerator Act and asks a practical question: what does “Made in EU” currently include, and where does engineering software fit?
What the article explores
TNW goes back to the proposal itself. It notes that European origin requirements begin at 5% for some materials, while CAD platforms, PDM systems, cloud hosting, and engineering collaboration tools are not mentioned.
TNW points out that CAD ROOMS could benefit if European procurement rules were extended to engineering software and data infrastructure. That is a fair observation because this is the market we work in. At the same time, the article agrees that European engineering teams still need to consider where their design files are stored, who operates the platforms they use, and which laws may apply to their data.
TNW clearly separates what the Industrial Accelerator Act proposes today from the wider question of what European industrial policy might cover in the future.
